I was one of the lucky people who was able to go to the NFL football game at Wembley on Sunday. I was like a little kid, soooo very excited. You’d think I’d have been a mad fan back in the states with how excited I was. I don’t think I’ve been to more that two NFL games in my life.

There I was with my free Buccaneers flag and a cold beer singing the American National anthem at the top of my lungs with hand over heart. Yep, I did get a bit teary. Silly, I know…but didn’t care. There was American advertising being displayed for the live telecast back home to America – Chevrolet, Dunkin Doughnuts and Gatorade. I got that warm little feeling in my stomach of feeling a little bit of Americana here in London.
No the game was not brilliant as the Buccaneers got their butts whipped by the Patriots. I still had the most amazing time. A little pride in my home country for such a fun sporting event with the cheerleaders, fireworks and a sport I understand.
I ask myself today: Why did I get all emotionally charged at the game? Why did I love it so much? I didn’t attend that many games in the states.
I’d have to say that it was definately due to thngs being familiar to me: my knowledge about the game; the National Anthem, being around other American’s and the overall American ambiance. Finally, here’s something that I can discuss with the men with some authority! I knew what I was talking about…for the most part anyways.

As an expatriate living in a forgein country, this experience reminds me once again that doing things that are familiar creates feelings of comfort and joy. It is so important to continue to do those things that you enjoyed in your home country, no matter what they may be. There may be a bit of compromise on location or how often you can participate, but experiencing that which is familiar is sooooo flipping fun. Your essential self wants to still do those things you enjoyed in your home country. What do you love to do?
What do you wish you still participated in since your relocation? Tell me below.
With gratitude,
Kelli
